How To Keep Your Hair Healthy This Summer

How to Keep Your Hair Healthy this Summer

Summer is here! And with Summer comes high temps, humidity, and lots of sunshine leading to hair damage. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep your hair healthy during the sweltering Summer months.

Summer means lots of pool time and with that comes chlorine. Chlorine is a chemical that sucks all the nutrients and oils from your hair leaving it dry, weak and rough leading to breakage. Depending on how often your hair is exposed to chlorine, you can use a swimmers shampoo weekly or bi-weekly to break down the chlorine–the rest of the time use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair hydrated, as a swimmers shampoo can be drying.

We all want to spend as much time outdoors as we can in the Summer months, but that can mean sun damage to your hair. The sun acts as bleach which reacts with the melanin in your hair (removing your hair’s coloring) and also damages keratin (the hair’s cuticle and protein). To protect your hair from the sun–wear a wide brimmed hat and keep it fully covered or use a SPF spray designed to block harmful rays. To keep hair strong, use a moisturizing shampoo and occasionally use a keratin hair mask to replenish and strengthen the hair.
